Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) Testing Information for 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade

Dear Parents/Guardians,

REMINDER – As we approach the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) state testing period for grades three through five, we want to share some important information to help ensure a smooth testing experience for all students.

Testing Window: April 7 – April 17

To provide the best testing environment for your child, we kindly ask that you make every effort to schedule any appointments outside of this testing window. Students tend to perform better when they test with their peers in a familiar setting, minimizing the need for makeup testing. Attendance and punctuality during these days are crucial to supporting your child’s success.

Please ensure that your child gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives on time each day. Your support in creating a positive testing experience is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us 303-702-8040

Thank you for your cooperation and partnership in your child’s education!

Highlands Wins the SVVSD Kindness Challenge!

We are excited to share that Highlands Elementary was named the winner of the St. Vrain Valley School District Kindness Challenge! Throughout the 28 days of February, our Hawks showed what it truly means to lead with kindness, compassion, and inclusion.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. McGregor, our school counselor, for leading and inspiring this wonderful effort across our school community.

Students and staff participated in many meaningful activities, including a 28 Days of Kindness Calendar Challenge, a whole-school kindness and inclusion assembly, and classroom counseling lessons focused on kindness. Our 5th graders created kindness videos that were shared at the assembly, and some of our 5th grade students even designed a Kindness Vending Machine filled with positive notes for anyone who needs a boost.

Kindness spread throughout the building in creative ways!

4th grade students created joke videos to make the school smile, 2nd graders designed kindness posters that were displayed in the windows for the community to see, and 5th graders sent Kindness Grams with letters and fruit snacks to fellow 5th graders across the Erie feeder schools.

We also celebrated with a Kindness Spirit Week, and students wrote and shared kindness notes with classmates, staff members, and family. Our HHH Club extended kindness beyond our school by hosting a drive to collect toys, games, and crafts for Children’s Hospital Colorado.

We are incredibly proud of our students for showing that small acts of kindness can make a big impact. Way to go, Highlands Hawks!

HawkQuest Assembly Coming to Highlands – April 1

We are excited to welcome HawkQuest to Highlands Elementary on Wednesday, April 1 for a special school assembly! HawkQuest is a Colorado nonprofit environmental education organization that brings live birds of prey—including hawks, owls, falcons, and eagles—to schools for engaging educational programs.

During the presentation, students will have the opportunity to see these incredible raptors up close while learning about their unique adaptations, their role in our ecosystem, and the importance of protecting wildlife and our environment. HawkQuest programs are designed to make learning about nature both fun and meaningful, inspiring students to develop respect for wildlife and the natural world.

We are looking forward to an exciting and memorable learning experience for our students!

Important Morning Drop-Off Reminders

Hug and Go

The east parking lot is the location for the Hug & Go lane, preschool entry, and special needs drop-off. Please only park in designated parking spaces and use the Hug & Go lane for quick drop-offs only. Students dropped off in the Hug & Go lane should walk to the west side of the building and line up with their class. The front doors ( door 1) are reserved only for students arriving after the 9:05 AM late bell.  If you are using the Hug & Go lane, please be sure to allow enough time for your student to walk to the west side of the building and line up with their class by 8:55 AM.

Handicap Parking

Handicap parking spaces may only be used by individuals displaying a valid handicap placard or license plate. We have received several reports regarding the misuse of these spaces, and we ask that all families help ensure they remain available for individuals who require them.

Preschool Drop Off:

Preschool classes begin at 8:50 AM and 12:40 PM. Families dropping off students should be aware that if they arrive after these times, the preschool doors may be closed, as class will have already started. Late arrivals will need to be dropped off at the front office. This procedure is in place to ensure student safety and minimize classroom disruptions.

Thank you for helping us keep arrival safe and organized for all students.

ParentSquare: Our New District Communication Tool

St. Vrain Valley Schools will begin using ParentSquare, a new district communication tool that allows families to receive notifications based on their preferences. St. Vrain’s communications team will pilot ParentSquare for the remainder of the school year with the plan to expand access to schools at the start of the 2026-27 school year. We’re excited about the opportunities ParentSquare offers to streamline communication and will be working towards consolidating several of the tools families currently use into one convenient platform.

After spring break, parents and guardians will receive an email invitation to activate their ParentSquare account. This will allow families to download the mobile app, set language preferences, and choose how and when they receive notifications.

Visit the district website to learn more about ParentSquare.

Fee Reminders

Material Fees

These fees directly support various student activities and resources at our school, enriching their educational experience.

In past years, these funds have contributed to our Exploratorium activities, grade-level educational magazines, science projects, and other specialized programs that benefit all students. We appreciate your support in making these valuable resources and activities possible.  Payment can be made in Infinite Campus.  Thank you to those who have already paid these fees.

iPad Insurance Fees

If you made a partial payment on your student’s iPad insurance fees, please be sure to complete your purchase. Insurance helps to offset costs associated with unintentional damage only when it is paid in full. If you would like to purchase insurance for your student’s iPad, please contact the front office.

Attendance

Chart showing absence categories: Chronic (18+ days), Warning signs (10-17 days), Satisfactory (9 or fewer days).

SVVSD Attendance Best Practices:

Students should have no more than 10 excused absences per year. Missing 10% or more of school days of school this year (excused or unexcused) counts aschronic absenteeism.

As we move into the fall and winter months, we encourage all families to periodically review our inclement weather protocols and shortened day schedules on the district website .
