Counseling News!

Counseling Classroom lessons have been in full swing at Highlands! Each classroom sees Ms. Peterson once per month with lessons tailored to the needs of their grade levels! Below is what each grade level has been learning so far this year!

– Kindergarteners have been exploring emotions and in October they focused on things that make them feel happy!

– First graders have been exploring how to understand other people’s emotions and recently went to “personal space camp” to learn how to respect others’ personal bubbles.

– Second graders have been working to become emotion detectives and most recently learned to identify the size of their problems and the appropriate size reaction to them.

– Third grade has been studying the difference between Rude, Mean, and Bullying as well as learning strategies for dealing with those behaviors.

– Fourth Graders have been exploring connecting and disconnecting ways of communicating and the appropriate ways to let someone know you are upset.

– Fifth grade identified the importance of listening, following directions, and giving directions by teaching Ms. Peterson the appropriate way to make a sandwich!

Dear Parents/Guardians

A heartfelt thank you for attending our recent parent-teacher conferences. Your presence underscores our shared commitment to our children’s education. Together we are shaping a brighter future for our students.

We also want to thank our PTO, families and community supporters for the conference dinners. It certainly helps our staff get through the long days and nights to have a good meal to keep us going. It is one less thing we have to think about. Thank you so much!

Halloween Parade! ~ Parents are welcome to watch the parade outside as the students walk around the perimeter of the school to show off the amazing costumes. The parade will begin at 9:15 on October 31st!

We would like to share our expectations regarding costumes at school: Costumes need to be school appropriate meaning that your child will be engaging in learning activities throughout the day; they need to be comfortable and able to learn (i.e. the large blow up costumes will be worn only during the party). The following will not be allowed at school ~ masks, full face paint, play weapons, or costumes with blood/gore. We want to make sure that our students feel safe while affording them an opportunity to have fun. Have a great weekend!
