First graders have had a busy fall! We’ve learned about 3 types of respect (self, others, and community), written opinion pieces, solved addition and subtraction facts up to 20 AND learned all about light and sound waves. We also had a visit from our local Firefighters and EMTs to teach us all about fire safety. What an amazing month we’ve had!

Dear Parents,

We are excited to announce our upcoming Halloween parade!  It will begin on 10/31 at 9:15.  Students will parade (outside) around the perimeter of the school. 

For Kindergarten and 1st grade, the Halloween activities will take place in the morning while 2nd grade through 5th grade will hold their activities at the end of the day. Teachers will coordinate the specific time to parents soon. As a reminder, all food brought to the event must be store-bought, in accordance with district policy, which will be strictly enforced this year.  During the parade, children are welcome to wear masks, but they will not be allowed to wear them during the school day. Additionally, no swords or weapons (of any kind) are permitted.

For classroom parties, we kindly ask that the number of parents hosting be limited, and all individuals must remain in the line of sight of the classroom teachers at all times. Thank you for helping us ensure a fun and safe event!

We have been having unseasonably warm weather but the cold is just around the corner. Please make sure your students are dressed appropriately for the sudden changes of warm to cold that happen in the fall. For those who are new, and a reminder to our community, we have included our weather policy which is in our Highlands Parent Code of Conduct.

Recess is an integral part of the school day and all students will be expected to participate.  Students should wear clothing and shoes appropriate for outside play.  Students can be excused from recess with a doctor’s note.

 Children will go outside for recess unless there is excessive precipitation, lightning or if the temperature falls below 15 degrees (temperature + wind chill).

Parents, please note:

Drop off and Parking Safety

Safety is our top priority when students are entering and exiting our school. With this in mind we would like to remind all of our families about parking, drop off and pick up procedures at Highlands Elementary. 

General Safety Notes

Highlands staff student supervision begins at 8:50am, we ask that students do not arrive to campus prior to this time.  

Upon arrival students should line up at their assigned  doors.

Any child arriving after 9:05 will need to be brought in by the adult guardian and signed in for proper attendance recording.

South Parking Lot 

This is a staff parking and bus pick up/drop off area only.  Cars should not be using this area for drop off or pick up. Families should walk students using the sidewalks as bus visibility is limited. 

East Parking Lot 

This is the location of the hug and go lane, preschool entry and special needs drop off.  Children should walk to their assigned doors after being dropped off.  

West area playground/field 

Students are not to play on the equipment (even with parent supervision) before school begins.

Community members are invited to explore a variety of roles in education, from paraprofessionals and custodians to transportation and clerical staff, all focused on making a meaningful impact on students’ lives. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with St. Vrain leaders, discuss current job openings, learn more about employee benefits, and receive assistance with submitting online applications.

St. Vrain Preschool Literacy Night with Author Rosemary Wells, Tuesday Oct. 15
Preschool families in St. Vrain Valley Schools are invited to a special literacy night featuring renowned author Rosemary Wells on October 15 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m., at the Innovation Center of St. Vrain Valley Schools. Rosemary Wells, celebrated for her beloved characters like Max & Ruby, Noisy Nora, and Yoko, will read her book “If You Believe in Me,” which preschoolers have received as part of our early reading initiative. During the event, Rosemary will lead a discussion on the book’s themes, demonstrate her approach to character creation as the book’s illustrator, and sign students’ individual books. Students will participate in an art activity during a portion of the event, exploring different mediums similar to what Rosemary uses for her illustrations.
